How Common Are Trucking Accidents?
Trucking accidents are more common than one would imagine. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), eleven percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2019 occurred in large truck crashes.
Large truck crashes are more fatal to passenger vehicle occupants. In other words, the people in the smaller cars are more vulnerable. This is mainly because trucks are taller and have bigger ground clearance, and often weigh twenty to thirty times as much as passenger cars. This can often cause the smaller car to underride trucks in crashes.
Why are we telling you this?
It is because we want you to know that you are not alone. Trucking accidents happen and we want you to know that we are here for you. The Maineri Law firm has experience with trucking accidents and we know how to help you.

Common Causes of Trucking Accidents
The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) examined the causes of truck accidents. Each crash in the study sample involved at least a large truck and resulted in death or injury.
According to the study, 87% trucking accidents are caused by the driver, 10% are caused by the vehicle itself, 3% are caused by the environment.
Trucking accidents caused by the driver may be due to any of the following listed in four categories (data taken from the LTCCS):
- Non-performance: This is when the driver falls asleep. This can also be when he/she is disabled by a heart attack or seizure. Or because of another reason that impairs him/her physically.
- Recognition: This is when the driver isn’t paying attention due to a distraction inside or outside the vehicle.
- Decision: This is when the driver is speeding for the conditions at the time. He/She may have misjudged the speed of other vehicles. Or he/she may have followed other vehicles too closely.
- Performance: This is when the driver panicked, overcompensated, or had poor control.
